DOGS (& CATS) - When the love of my life, Shadow, a stray I found in a parking lot, got sick I immediately took him to the vet. Shadow's fur started falling out in clumps. His skin became inflamed and fiery red. His incessant itching, scratching, and licking aggravated his sensitive skin more and more. He licked his paws until they bled to try to soothe the itching and irritation. He also had an ear infection.
After spending hundreds of dollars on tests, including an allergy test, it was determined that Shadow was allergic to chicken, rice, and potato, just to name a few. I thought oh God, what am I going to feed this dog? After wiping the tears from my face, I went online to find answers. What I found about commercial pet food sickened me. I could not believe I paid top dollar for a bag of, literally, garbage. (* See ingredients below)
I began to make him home cooked meals. I started out with beef as the base meat and gradually removed it from his home made recipe. Shadow had become a vegan dog. Over the course of several months, his health began to improve. His coat filled in and his ear infections stopped.
Since I was not a nutritionist, I felt I should find out what suppplements needed to go into his meals. I learned that dogs need two amino acids called L-carnitine and taurine and that cats need vitamin A and taurine.
I home cooked for Shadow for almost a year, gradually seeing his health improve. One day I followed a link to a manufacturer of vegan pet foods.
I decided to order a bag and see if Shadow's health would continue to improve, or at least remain the same. Shadow loved his new food. He is healthy and happy and so is his sister Sabrina. Although Sabrina never fell victim to the pet food industry's poisoning, she also eats vegan dog food and is a healthy and happy dog.
